Manchester Basketball took a hard-fought 91-88 road win against Dinamo Zagreb in the European North Basketball League.
Led by 19 points and 4 rebounds from Max Jones, Manchester staved off a late Zagreb comeback to claim victory in Croatia. Jordan Johnson backed Jones with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists off the bench in an important performance for his team.
Manchester led by as many as 19 points in the game after a red-hot start. But winning European games on the road is never easy, and they were forced to dig deep down the stretch to see it out.
Jones, Johnson and Zak Irvin showed nerves of steel to hit free throws in the clutch which sealed the victory.
The visitors scored 14 points in the final 2:22 of the opening quarter to take an early advantage. This barrage of points was led by Kyle Carey, who hit a pair of free throws and a triple to stamp down authority on the game.
In the second, Manchester’s lead grew to 18 points thanks to a triple from a red-hot Johnson. He made three shots from deep on the night, leading the team with Jones. Manchester held Zagreb at arm’s length until the fourth, which is when the hosts rallied.
Back-to-back threes from the Croatians started the surge. They hit five threes in four minutes, and the lead was back to single digits in the blink of an eye. This three-point explosion wouldn’t end until Manchester’s lead was just one, with 24 seconds on the clock.
But they had just enough in the tank to win it. Jones was sent to the line and did both, as did Johnson. Another Zagreb three kept it close, but Irvin’s free throw was followed by a turnover and the final buzzer.
That was the final game of the ENBL group phase, in which Manchester finished 6-2 and secured a top-eight finish. That means their first playoff game will be played in Manchester in March.
Manchester remains on the road next for the Super League Basketball Championship. They take the short trip to Cheshire to play the Phoenix on Friday, February 6 at 7:30 pm.
They return home on Sunday, February 8, playing the Caledonia Gladiators at the National Basketball Performance Centre at 3 pm.
