Landolt Cup Preview: MCR in Switzerland

Manchester Basketball travel to Switzerland for their second overseas trip of pre-season. This time MCR take on two Geneva Lions and Strasbourg in the group phase of the Landolt Cup, here's a preview of what they have in store.

Geneva Lions vs Manchester Basketball
Thursday 4 September - 4.30pm (local time) in Yverdon-les-Bains

Geneva finished second in the league standings in Switzerland last time out with a 21-3 record, they won the Playoffs with a 3-1 record over Fribourg who finished in top spot. Coach Patrick Pembele and his assistant Hanlot Zabaleta have signed extensions to their contracts to remain at the Lions until 2018.

Geneva boast a majority of returning players that did a domestic double. Geneva started their pre-season at home with 91-85 win over French NM1 side Mulhouse and an away defeat to Elan Chalon, 97-63.

One to watch: Paul Gravet

SIG Strasbourg vs Manchester Basketball
Friday 5 September - 4.30pm (local time) in Yverdon-les-Bains

Strasbourg finished twelfth in the French top league last season, missing out on a playoff birth. A club with a huge tradition having won seven domestic trophies in the French league.

Coached by Austrian Janis Gailitis, Strasbourg have a couple of British links with Dan Akin signing for the side in 2023, Micheal Belle grew up in the SIG Strasbourg youth system before heading to college in the States. Strasbourg started their pre-season with a 83-80 win over ASA (Alliance Sport Alsace), Marcus Keene posting 23 points.

One to watch: Nelly Junior Joseph
Talented Nigerian guard who represented Atlanta Hawks in the 2025 summer league.
