Beginner's Guide To Basketball

Basketball basics!

New to basketball? Don't worry — you'll pick it up quickly. Two teams of five players compete on court, with the aim of scoring more points than the opposition.Free Throw — 1 Point Awarded following certain fouls.

How do you score?

Inside the Three-Point Line — 2 Points A basket scored from inside the three-point arc.
Outside the Three-Point Line — 3 Points
A basket scored from beyond the three-point arc.

How long is the game?
Games are played across four 10-minute quarters. If the scores are tied at the end of the fourth quarter, the game goes to five minutes of overtime. More overtime periods are played if required until there's a winner.

The Shot Clock
Teams have 24 seconds to attempt a shot once they gain possession. That's one of the reasons basketball moves so quickly — there's always pressure to attack .Fouls - Players aren't allowed to illegally hold, push, block or make excessive contact with an opponent. Depending on the situation, a foul can result in the opposing team receiving possession or being awarded free throws.

A player who commits five fouls during the game can no longer take part. Travelling- Players must dribble the basketball while moving around the court. Taking too many steps without dribbling is called travelling, and possession is awarded to the other team.
