GB rising star Irene Oboavwoduo joins Manchester

Manchester Basketball are delighted to announce that young British star Irene Oboavwoduo will join the 2025-26 women’s roster.

Oboavwoduo, a graduate of the Manchester Mystics programme, will represent Manchester Basketball before heading over to America to play for NCAA powerhouse Boston College. The 5'10" guard is widely regarded as one of the UK's top talents, attended NBA Basketball Without Borders this summer, and like fellow Manchester Basketball star Kaiyem Cleary, grew up in Gorton around the corner from Belle Vue.

“I’m grateful to be a part of the Manchester Basketball women’s team, we have a really talented squad and I am excited for the year ahead. I'm looking forward to see what we bring on court throughout the season,” commented Irene.

Head Coach Oli Parr commented: "I'm super excited for Irene, she can really add value to this roster and continue her development with us. I feel fortunate to work with such a talented local player."

Irene enjoyed an outstanding 2024-25 for Mystics, captaining England to U16 Four Nations gold and claiming the tournament’s MVP award for her performances.

“We are really happy to support upcoming British players, especially talents like Irene who are from around the corner,” reflected Dominique Allen.

“We couldn't be more excited to be a destination for young talent, she has a unique opportunity to learn from our coaches and elite professional players. We love Irene’s game and hows she’s developed at Mystics, and can’t wait to play a part in her development this season.”

“The opportunity to play for MCR is a testament to the countless hours Irene puts into developing her craft. “We are sure that the continued growth and maturity in her game will be an asset to their team and programme,” commented Manchester Mystics Director of Basketball Pete Paraskeva.

“All of us at The Manchester Magic & Mystics are extremely proud of Irene and she is the epitome of hard work pays off.”
