Game report: MCR 94-92 Dubrava

Manchester Basketball are through to the Quarter-Finals of the European North Basketball League, after beating BC Dubrava 94-92 in their playoff opener.

Max Jones went off for 31 points to lead Manchester to the win, hitting five threes on his way to 8-16 shooting from the field. Jones dished 5 assists and recorded a steal and a block in a complete performance on both ends.

Meanwhile, Pjay Smith supported Jones from the backcourt, scoring 23 points on the night. Smith also caught fire from deep, hitting six of his nine attempts from behind the arc. Jones and Smith combined for 11 of the team’s 16 triples.

Jordon Johnson carried Manchester's second unit with 13 off the bench, and Matt Nicholson had an incredible defensive display, blocking four shots on the night. The game needed every Manchester player to dig deep and step up for them to get it over the line late.

Jones was the one to seal the victory. He scored Manchester’s final 8 points down the stretch, including some clutch free throws to win it. He stepped up to the line twice with under a minute remaining to score the crucial points.

The American put the hosts up two with nine seconds remaining, giving Dubrava a shot to win or send it to overtime. That shot fell to John Wright, who had scored 34 points on the game, but his three-pointer missed, and Manchester took the win.

He and Smith combined for 19 of Manchester’s 21 fourth-quarter points, as the dynamic duo delivered late to stem the Dubrava surge. Smith hit a pair of important triples back-to-back before Smith’s late run.

The win sees Manchester progress to the Quarter-Finals in their first European season in the Club’s history, where they will play an opponent that is yet to be confirmed.

But first, they head to the South West of England to play the Bristol Flyers in the Super League Basketball Championship. The game will be played on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 pm.

They then take on London Lions in the SLB Cup Final at the AO Arena, Manchester. You can get tickets for this highly anticipated clash here!
