Game Report: Bristol Flyers 74-78 MCR

Manchester Basketball wins against the Bristol Flyers, Flyers 74-78 MCR, in the SLB Championship.

Manchester were led by stellar performances from Keon Thompson with 17 points and 8 boards and Luke Nelson with 19 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds for a near triple-double, in what proved to be a tightly fought contest with the Bristol Flyers.

Ciaran Sandy’s layup got Manchester on the board first as the game tipped off. The two teams exchanged baskets to start the game, reaching 12-12, before a 6-0 run from Keon Thompson Jr, a Brandon Mitchell-Day dunk and a Chandler Piggé layup built a 14-20 lead. Bristol hit back with a 9-2 run to go 23-22 up. Matt Nicholson’s layup, with two seconds left, put MCR back in front. The score at the end of the first quarter was Bristol 23-24 Manchester. The second quarter stayed tight, with the lead changing hands several times. A big dunk by Ciaran Sandy followed by baskets from Duke Shelton and Jonathan Brown built a 27-31 lead. However, just as MCR looked to pull away, Bristol responded with a run of their own, and Matteus Case’s two free throws levelled the score at 35–35 right before the break.

Coming out of the break, Manchester looked to break the deadlock established in the first half. Thompson and Nelson controlled the 3rd quarter, leading MCR offensively as the former scored 7 points and the later added 9. Manchester went on several runs throughout the quarter, leading by as many as seven points, but Bristol continued to fight back, levelling the score with three minutes remaining. However, it was in those final three minutes that Luke Nelson took control, scoring all nine of his third-quarter points and rebuilding Manchester's lead, capping it off with a fading three-pointer to beat the buzzer. The score going into the 4th quarter, Bristol Flyers 53-59 MCR. Nelson opened the fourth with three free throws, and Thompson scored eight points in the quarter, with Nelson adding eight of his own. A fadeaway from Nelson made it 67-78 with under two minutes to play, the biggest lead of the night. Davion Bailey kept Bristol fighting, but his three-point make in the dying seconds of the game came too late as Manchester kept the game out of Bristol's grasp, holding on to win, Bristol Flyers 74-78 Manchester Basketball.

Manchester Basketball are back on the road this Sunday, November 1 at 4pm, against Liverpool Basketball. The team then returns to the NBPC to face Cheshire Phoenix Friday, November 6, at 7:30 pm.
